Elsewhere
6 min., 16mm, color/sound, 2005

The half-remembered spaces - the obscure but guiding motion of a secret history.

Elsewhere was filmed over the course of several years and features images of the interiors of various houses, apartments, motel rooms, and an oasis at the edge of the desert. In the film time and space become a shifting and unstable photographic reproduction. The images are multiple-exposures that allow spaces to merge into one another in strange and inexplicable ways, either for reasons of formal construction or purely by accident. The film was processed by hand, adding a sense of unpredictability and instability to the look and feel of the images. Oftentimes the processing chemicals would only uncover a piece or a fragment of an image, as if certain events were only being partially remembered. The sound, much like the image, remains subtle, diffuse, and spectral. There is an apparent sense of impermanence, deterioration and loss, yet at the same time, a feeling of movement and change: a wish for transformation. In Elsewhere spaces are constructed out of bits of time, fragments of subjective experience, and incomplete memories, residing, instead, in a permanent state of transition.
